So, I'll take this a little bit further. Not only was 1983 the year I graduated high school, it was also the year of the '80s British Invasion. I still have the Time magazine which featured Annie Lennox of Eurythmics and Boy George on the cover form that year. '83 saw the US pop charts finally open up to more British acts such as them and Duran Duran and Human League, although technically Human League debuted in the US in 1982.

By '83 American commercial radio buzzed with some new sounds, however, as I was finding out, it was merely the tip of the iceberg as far as Brit-pop goes. As I look at this chart today, over 25 years later, it makes me cringe. Like most American teenagers at the time I was completely clueless as to how much music there was in the world beyond the American Top 40 pop charts. Unless you gained access to a college radio station or lived in major cities like LA, NYC or Chicago, you had no way to discover music beyond commercial radio. I was fortunate enough to find a college station from St. Louis University, KWMU, and a late Friday overnight program called Pipeline hosted by one Michael Schreiver, although I wish I knew how to correctly spell his name because I've tried to track him down to thank him for opening up the world of what was then called alternative music for me. I cannot find any info from the KWMU site either.
